3. How long have you lived in Lake County?

We arrived in Lake County about 30 years ago, we’ve been here for 30 years; my family. Before living in Lake County we lived in California for a short time. My parents came here for work. Many times I hear: Oh! you came to the mountains to ski, and I’m like  “NO” we came to work, my parents.

Are you in love with the mountains?

Eudelia: You know I haven’t always been, now I’m learning to, well I’ve learned to fall in love with this place, with the opportunities it has given me and yes, with having that love for nature, the mountains that are spectacular here in Lake County.

4. What is your relationship with Spanish? / ¿Cuál es tu relación con el español?

My relationship with Spanish is: when I think of Spanish, I think of what defines me, since it is the first language that I began to speak at home with my family. Also when I think in Spanish, I think of a lot of happiness, I think of many smiles. I think because, it takes me back to when I was a child that the aunts would get together in the kitchen to talk and that all the male and female cousins were in another place playing and I would hear that laughter, from afar, from the family.

Let’s say Spanish makes you feel at home?

Eudelia: Totally, Spanish makes me feel at home, it makes me feel me and fun, when I think in Spanish I think of fun, jokes, laughter, I have no other word.

Yesterday Eudelia told me that when she thinks of Spanish, she thinks of the richness of Spanish!

Eudelia: Yes, totally!! I think that a joke that is so rich, so full of laughs in Spanish or sayings since we have many sayings in Spanish, will never ever; No matter how much we translate it into English, it will never be the same.

5. Tell me about your first steps as a community leader?

I think that my first steps as a community leader were from a very young age, although at that time I did not know it. My mother became a single mother, we were very young, me and my sisters and she had to go out to work and I, being the oldest, had to take care of my little sisters and my little brother and I was like, they listened to me and listened to what I said and I think that since then it just started, but at that time I didn’t know.

I know that Eudelia is an innate leader, you have a tremendous leadership vocation!

6. Tell me about your journey at LCBAG / Háblame sobre tu trayectoria en LCBAG.

Yes, look LCBAG, had really been around for many years. When I got to LCBAG I needed to learn how I could fit in. The way I entered this organization was very interesting because I had been in facilitation training with the director of the organization at that time and I remember, it stayed in my mind that she was very good at writing and things like that, an area that I don’t feel is my strong area. Later they hired me as an interpreter because since I was a child I have been there as an interpreter with the neighbors, the “comadres” and all that, then many years later LCBAG called me asking if I could interpret for some meetings and that is how I connected a little and began to know a little about work and at that moment I remember that I wanted to change the job where I was and I came with the director, you can see my work resume; can you give me your opinion what changed and she says: we are hiring here, why don’t you deliver it here? That was how I started.

The first coalition that I started to lead was that of safe routes to school, which is totally different from what I am doing now, I imagined at that time that I was going to take the children to school, I was in front with a big “Let’s walk to school” sign and it’s totally different.

Talking to you makes me feel like you are very proud to be a woman and to be Latina!

7. Do you want to talk a little about your experience as a translator and how translating has brought you closer to the community?

Yes, being a translator is the way in which I have created many relationships with the community. I don’t know if I would have created those relationships otherwise. As I have told you, from a very young age I began to go to doctor’s appointments with people from the community in which I lived or make phone calls, sometimes some not so pleasant calls. Yes, that experience helped me, but now that I see it, a girl had no business knowing about these intense things that sometimes happen in the community because she is an immigrant or a Latin person or does not have access to the language.

When did your professional community work start? / ¿Profesionalmente tu trabajo comunitario en qué momento empezó? / When did your professional community work start?

Eudelia: I remember well that we were a group of friends and I was in the eighth grade, or younger, maybe it was the sixth grade and they came on the fifth of May, when you go to school here all your life that you come from another country, they don’t really teach you much about your culture, where you come from. Cinco de Mayo now I know that it is not a big celebration in my country as it is here in the United States. I remember that a group of friends and I wanted to celebrate our culture because none of us really knew what Cinco de Mayo meant, we wanted to have a dance celebration and it was a fight with the teachers because this meant us leaving class to learn from the dances, the celebration activities, that we could have in this type of event and although it was very well received, it was not something that the teachers supported very much at that time.

8. What is Cooperativa Nueva Unión and what does it mean to you?

Cooperativa Nueva Unión, for me they are two things in one. So far in my career as a community organizer, it is the greatest achievement, a very great success; something I am very proud of. Not only for me but for the community and the residents who live there in Cooperativa Nueva Unión and it was a very hard job. It is the first mobile home  community where the residents are the owners. That was my dream since Istarted working with LCBAG. I said if the owners are the residents and they create their rules, many problems will end. So when that opportunity finally came up, it was incredible, because it was a reflection of hard work.

9. What do you think is the main obstacle that a Latina and immigrant woman has to face to obtain a management position in a place like LCBAG?

I think that the biggest obstacle that a Latina woman faces, to reach higher level positions, is that  there is already a preconceived notion that Latinas cannot, that they do not want to orthey have no interest. I think a lot of that still exists and the other thing is that not all of us had access to higher education after high school. Many times we do not continue our education. In my case, for example, my parents only received education up to the third grade and then they had to leave to be able to work.It is difficult to break that cycle because you don’t know how.  But we Latina women, especially in these jobs where they want to enter the Latinex community, have lived experience and many times that is what helps us go further than a degree.

10. Do you consider yourself an empowered Latina woman? / ¿Te consideras una mujer Latina empoderada?

Now, I do consider myself an empowered Latina woman and it took me a long time. Now I believe.  Not only in the professional field, that has a lot to do with it, but I think that now I have lost my fear much more, even putting limits on things that I do not want to do or that do not have time to do and that do not serve my well-being. I am no longer afraid to say “No” I will not do it, just to look good at a job or a task is something I’m not going to do. If it is not something that brings enrichment to my life, education, or my brain, I will not take it on.
