Gender equity and language justice are core values of our organization and essential practices for advancing health equity, creating shared community power, and dismantling systems of oppression in Lake County. In service of our mission, LCBAG has decided to use Latine instead of Latinx or Latina/o.
Through trainings with an expert consultant and a participatory research process, we learned that Latine has been adopted by many Spanish speaking LGBTQ+ communities as the most gender inclusive language for nonbinary folks. In addition to being gender inclusive, Latine honors the Spanish language because ‘e’ is a more natural pronunciation in Spanish than ‘x’. For these reasons, we believe this choice is mission-aligned and responsive to the various oppressions at play for the Spanish-speaking LGBTQ+ community, including sexism, cissexism, and language oppression.
Language evolves over time, and LCBAG will continue learning about gender equity and language justice. We are committed to listening and adapting our practices as our understanding shifts. We recognize that identity is complex and the term Latine will not feel representative for everyone. We hope that you will express your identity in the way that feels best to you, and honor the choices of others in our community.

La equidad de género y la justicia lingüística son valores fundamentales en nuestra organización y prácticas esenciales para promover la equidad en salud, crear poder comunitario compartido y desmantelar sistemas de opresión en el condado de Lake. Al servicio de nuestra misión, LCBAG ha decidido utilizar Latine en lugar de Latinx o Latina/o.
A través de capacitaciones con un consultor experto y un proceso de investigación participativa, aprendimos que muchas comunidades LGBTQ+ de habla hispana han adoptado Latine como el lenguaje más inclusivo de género para personas no binarias. Además de incluir género, Latine honra el idioma español ya que ‘e’ es una pronunciación más natural en español que ‘x’. Por estas razones, creemos que esta elección está alineada con la misión y responde a las diversas opresiones en juego para la comunidad LGBTQ+ de habla hispana, incluido el sexismo, el cissexismo y la opresión del idioma.
